LIKE THE TORTOISE
Day four of driving lessons. My son is getting better at driving and gaining more confidence. I, however, am still a bundle of nerves.
‘You’re so stressed’, my son commented as he noticed my shallow breathing and waving of hands, letting him know he needs to move a bit over to his side of the road.
‘Try to understand how it is from my viewpoint’, I replied.
Today we drove to Costco to get the tires serviced. A simple enough service, until they found a screw in the front passenger tire. That would account for the flatter looking tire lately.
We walked around in the neighbouring shopping area whilst waiting for the call to let us know the car was ready to be picked up.
Our first stop was at the Sprouts Farmers Market store, though it wasn’t really a farmers market. My son commented how it felt as if we were in a different country because we’ve never been there and it was something new. Actually, I remember going to that store once alone. A long time ago. Our next and final stop was World Market. It was a new location, having recently relocated.
After picking up the car, my son drove to Barnes and Noble where I got some colourful notecards with envelopes. Then it was back home.
The route to get to Costco was the same as yesterday, with more merging and changing lanes. The merge onto FM 2222 proved to be a greater challenge today as all but one of the cars kept going in front of us. Only the guy behind us actually stayed behind us and prompted my son to move forward when it was safe to do so.
Slow and steady. Like the tortoise in the story with the hare, progress comes to those who do a little every day. Not all at once. Consistency being the key.
